- Beans – 1/4 cup (finely chopped, optional)
- Salt – to taste
- Water – 2 1/2 cups (for softer upma, use 2 1/4 cups)
- Lemon juice – 1 tsp (optional)
- Coriander leaves – for garnish (optional)
